The rise of agent-to-agent commerce: When AI starts shopping for AI

Merchants are preparing cleaner product data and checkout systems as AI agents move from product research to completing purchases, researchers and consultants said.

  • Online shopping is shifting from direct human interaction to agentic commerce, where digital proxies navigate marketplaces on behalf of human shoppers. McKinsey partner Becca Coggins calls this a fundamental reconfiguration of the customer journey.
  • Deloitte uses "workflow autonomy" to describe how much of a purchase software handles end-to-end. The future of shopping may be less about "clicking" and more about "delegating," reducing steps users manage directly.
  • PwC reports that agent-ready commerce depends on clean, structured product data being "transactable." If a size or compatibility detail is missing, software cannot confirm the product fits the request, halting the order.
  • Trust remains the primary hurdle for autonomous shopping regarding financial authorization. Bob Hedges, a fellow at MIT's Initiative on the Digital Economy, notes formal rules specify fraud liability, though applying them to AI agents remains under negotiation.
  • Columbia Business School researchers studied AI agents selecting products without human input, while Bain describes this progression as shopping AI moving from gathering information to acting like a copilot. These developments signal software becoming retailers' direct transaction contact.
