Rangers goalie Joonas Korpisalo is week to week with a lower-body injury, AP source says
Joonas Korpisalo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, and Dylan Garand returns to the NHL roster as New York’s backup.
New York Rangers backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, according to reports on Thursday. The team placed the 32-year-old on injured reserve.
To fill the roster vacancy, 24-year-old Dylan Garand was recalled from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack. Garand cleared waivers earlier in the week after being pushed down the depth chart this summer.
Korpisalo was acquired from the Boston Bruins this offseason for a $3 million annual salary. It remains unclear exactly when the injury occurred, as he has not played a game this season.
Thursday's home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Friday's game at the Detroit Red Wings create a back-to-back schedule. Garand could be counted on to start the second game in Michigan.
Igor Shesterkin, who started Tuesday's 3-0 loss at Boston, remains the primary option in net. The team will depend on Shesterkin during this period while adjusting to the temporary loss of their backup goaltender.
