Edmonton Oilers Put Veteran Centre Nugent-Hopkins on Injured Reserve
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will miss at least one more game after an injury in practice, and the Oilers recalled Josh Samanski under emergency conditions.
On Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers placed forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on injured reserve and recalled forward Josh Samanski from AHL Bakersfield to address roster shortages.
Alongside Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers placed forward Matt Savoie and defenseman Alec Regula on the long-term injured reserve list, compounding roster depth issues.
NHL rules define "emergency conditions" as when a team falls below two goalies, six defensemen, and 12 forwards, allowing clubs to bypass standard waiver requirements.
Samanski, a German-born forward, signed a two-year $1.95 million contract with Edmonton and recorded two goals and two assists in 24 games last season.
Head coach Mike Babcock listed Nugent-Hopkins as day-to-day, though he noted it usually means "two weeks," as the team recovers from a 6-5 overtime loss to Vancouver.
