Dylan Larkin to Miss First 2 Games of Red Wings Season, McLellan Says
Larkin has missed all four exhibition games and is recovering from an upper-body injury, while McLellan said the Red Wings are working with the training staff.
Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed Thursday that Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin will miss the first two regular season games due to an upper-body injury, including Friday's opener against the New York Rangers and Sunday's matchup with the Winnipeg Jets.
Larkin remains enmeshed in controversy after requesting a trade shortly after last season ended, and he reported to training camp but sat out all preseason games while managing the upper-body injury.
Interim GM Shawn Horcoff reiterated that the Wings remain steadfast in seeking value-now players in return for Larkin, who holds a contract with an $8.7 million salary cap hit and a no-trade clause.
Teammate Moritz Seider said, "We need him as a player, and I think that's what matters the most," while McLellan eyes a potential return for Larkin by the third game against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Seeking to emerge from 10 straight years of missing the playoffs, the franchise continues to rely on Larkin, who recorded a career-high 34 goals and 33 assists last season.
