Well-rested Dallas Stars hope long offseason sets them up to make another deep playoff run
The extended break helped several key players recover from injuries and gave the team more time to prepare for another playoff push.
The Dallas Stars open their season on Friday against St. Louis after a 155-day offseason, marking their longest gap between seasons in five years following first-round playoff elimination.
General Manager Jim Nill described the extended downtime as providing "a break physically and a break mentally" for players who endured intense playoff hockey. The extra recovery time preceded the expanded 84-game regular season.
Tyler Seguin, nearing the end of his $78.8 million eight-year contract after December ACL surgery, rejoined healthy teammates including top center Roope Hintz. The 23-year-old Wyatt Johnston enters his new season after playing all 390 Stars regular-season and playoff games since his debut four years ago.
Second-Year coach Glen Gulutzan said Jamie Benn trained "like crazy" this summer and is "probably the skinniest that he's ever seen him." Benn acknowledged the game is getting faster and he's adapting his preparation accordingly.
The October 2 opener marks the earliest season start for the Stars since October 1, 1999, when they raised the Stanley Cup banner 3½ months after their championship. The team now enters an expanded regular season without previous scheduling constraints.
