B.C. wildfire survivors include pet salamander and tarantula

The BC SPCA has taken in 126 emergency boarders since late July as evacuees search for missing pets and reunite with survivors.

  • When Amanda Roberts fled the Bald Range fire with her son River, they left pets in an abandoned vehicle; miraculously, Mongo the salamander and Velky Pavouk the tarantula survived five days before an RCMP officer rescued them.
  • The wildfire destroyed or damaged 150 structures in Summerland and Faulder, forcing Roberts to evacuate during the frantic Aug. 7 evacuation and leaving her home destroyed, along with a ball python that did not survive.
  • Kaila Wolf, spokesperson for the BC SPCA, reported the organization has provided free emergency boarding for 126 pets since late July, with 45 currently in care. "Because it's a stressful time," Wolf said, the service gives displaced owners necessary breathing room.
  • Dozens of social media posts feature photos of missing dogs, cats, and chickens as owners await reunification. Residents who stayed behind are putting out food and treats "in hopes of corralling in the missing animals."
  • Ensuring future reunification, the SPCA urges pet owners to tattoo or chip animals for easier identification. Wolf emphasized that "any sort of emergency preparedness should extend to the animals in your home as well.
