'The weather conditions aren't helping us much': Bald Range in Summerland wildfire continues to grow west
BC Wildfire Service said 284 firefighters, 112 structure protection personnel and 15 helicopters are battling the blaze as winds and terrain drive more growth.
- As of Wednesday, August 19, the Bald Range wildfire has grown to 22,082 hectares, with eight evacuation orders and 14 evacuation alerts remaining in place. The blaze ranks as one of 129 active wildfires in the province.
- Incident Commander Hugh Murdoch reported Tuesday that changing weather conditions have made suppressing the blaze challenging. Crews are observing pockets of fire displaying Rank 3, 4, and 5 behavior, complicating containment.
- Responding to the blaze, an Incident Command team coordinates 284 firefighting personnel and 112 structure protection personnel. BCWS operates 15 helicopters and 70 pieces of heavy equipment while conducting 24-hour operations.
- Working in the Shingle Creek area, crews are strengthening control lines while conducting direct attacks and small-scale hand ignitions where conditions allow. They are advancing westward toward McNulty Forest Service Road.
- A changing weather pattern on Wednesday with high temperatures and shifting winds could increase fire behavior, according to BCWS. Additionally, stronger and shifting winds are expected on Friday, posing further challenges.
