Department of Energy Awards Funding to Utah Geothermal Projects
The projects will test next-generation geothermal technologies and exploration drilling as DOE seeks to expand reliable clean power.
- On Monday, the United States Department of Energy selected 21 projects for up to $99 million in funding to advance around-the-clock geothermal power development across the country.
- The awards support field-scale tests of next-generation technologies and exploration drilling, with five projects focused on Enhanced Geothermal Systems and 16 projects dedicated to resource identification.
- Recipients include Fervo Energy, selected for two projects, and Quaise Energy, which received up to $25 million for Project Obsidian in Oregon, alongside Zanskar Geothermal and Invenergy.
- Data generated under the projects will be shared by the Department of Energy through its Geothermal Data Repository to guide future technology development and resource exploration.
- Project Obsidian targets more than 50 megawatts of electric power by 2030, using advanced techniques to reach reservoir temperatures over 400°C, positioning it as a flagship demonstration.
