OpenAI Takes on Meta with Always-on Dots Agent in Enterprise AI Push

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled always-on AI agents called Dots at its DevDay event in San Francisco, powered by GPT-6 Astra and designed to handle tasks autonomously across connected apps.
Interest in autonomous AI assistants surged after Meta's Muse drew millions of downloads earlier this month, prompting OpenAI to launch Dots as a direct competitor in the rapidly expanding agent market.
Operating on their own cloud computers, Dots include built-in rules for independent action but allow users to set custom boundaries dictating when agents require permission, supported by auto-review features verifying compliance with safety requirements.
Starting today, ChatGPT Pro subscribers at $100 monthly and Business Premium users gain access to Dots, with OpenAI reiterating it does not use business customers' data for AI training by default.
Text messaging with Dots via iMessage and RCS on Android will launch soon, while OpenAI envisions teams of Dots collaborating on projects—though Reuters reported Friday the company is still addressing rogue agent incidents that leaked 53 images from earlier breaches.
