UK workers spend nearly £1 billion of their own money on AI for work, Deloitte finds
A Deloitte survey found 17% of workers pay for GenAI tools themselves, and 31% use them without employer knowledge.
- On Wednesday, Deloitte research revealed one in six workers in Britain pays for AI tools, collectively spending nearly £1 billion annually of their own money.
- The inaugural GenAI Workforce Survey polled 25,000 workers via Ipsos, finding two-thirds have tried tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, with nearly a quarter using them daily.
- With 31% of employees using GenAI without employer knowledge—shadow AI—Hayley McKelvey, Deloitte UK's chief AI officer, said, "UK workers are showing they don't want to wait for permission to use GenAI."
- Popular AI uses include searching for information, drafting emails, and creating summaries, saving workers an average of 70 minutes weekly; Deloitte partner Paul Lee noted GenAI has become part of everyday working life.
- Organizations will gain the greatest advantage from GenAI by moving beyond simply providing access to tools, focusing instead on helping employees use them with "appropriate guardrails and purpose.
