Nissan to build new hybrid SUV model for Europe at its UK plant
Nissan is investing £170 million to adapt the plant for the model, which will be the 10th built there and is expected to support 6,000 jobs.
- On Wednesday, Nissan announced it will invest $229 million in its Sunderland, England, plant to produce the Kicks hybrid SUV for the European market.
- Marking its 40th anniversary this year, the Sunderland facility represents Britain's largest car assembly plant and will produce the Kicks as its 10th model.
- Featuring Nissan's unique e-Power hybrid system, the Kicks uses a 1.4-liter internal combustion engine to generate power for the vehicle's battery rather than directly drive the wheels.
- British Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Jonathan Reynolds welcomed the decision, calling it "a huge vote of confidence in the U.K.'s manufacturing expertise and automotive future."
- Next year, the plant will start rolling out the third-generation Juke, which will switch to a fully electric drivetrain as Sunderland continues expanding its hybrid and electric production.
