Hurricane Center Tracks 2 New Atlantic Systems that Could Develop

One wave has a 30% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm in seven days, while another has a 20% chance, forecasters said.

  • The National Hurricane Center began monitoring two tropical waves off the coast of Africa on Saturday for potential development. Neither system currently poses an immediate threat to land areas.
  • With only two named systems—Tropical Storms Arthur and Bertha—the Atlantic hurricane season has been slow since June. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects seven to 13 named storms during the season.
  • A tropical wave located southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is producing scattered showers and moving westward. Forecasters give this system a 20% chance of developing into a Tropical Depression over the next seven days.
  • Expected to move off the West Africa coast on Tuesday, a second wave is entering the Atlantic with stronger development potential. This system carries a 40% chance of formation through the next seven days.
  • Saharan Dust and unfavorable wind conditions may inhibit both systems as they move westward across the Atlantic. If either wave organizes, the next two names on the list are Cristobal and Dolly.
