Tropical Depression Likely to Form in Atlantic Within Days

NHC monitors Atlantic disturbances, with one system showing a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression by week's end.

  • The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical wave about 900 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands with an 80% chance of development over the next seven days. The system could become a tropical depression soon.
  • Designated as Invest 92-L on Tuesday, the wave is becoming better organized as it moves away from the coast of West Africa. Environmental conditions are conducive for gradual development across the Central Tropical Atlantic.
  • AccuWeather meteorologist Nick Arman told Newsweek on Tuesday that "the most likely intensity would be either a tropical depression, or a low-end tropical storm." Forecasters expect strengthening within the next couple of days.
  • Should the disturbance reach tropical storm strength, it will be named Cristobal, marking the third named cyclone of the 2026 Atlantic season. The system continues moving westward before encountering conditions that limit further development.
  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects a below-normal hurricane season, assigning a 75 percent probability to this outlook. El Niño, currently active in the Pacific, generally increases wind shear and suppresses tropical system formation across the Atlantic basin.
