Japan Gov't Eyes Hitachiomiya as Survey Site for Nuclear Waste Disposal
The ministry says the site would enter the first of three selection stages, with municipalities eligible for up to 2 billion yen in subsidies.

- Hitachiomiya was identified in a 2017 scientific map as a candidate site for its favorable geological conditions, including the absence of nearby volcanoes or active faults.
- Participating municipalities can receive up to 2 billion yen in government grants for the two-year literature survey, which examines geological safety for facilities more than 300 meters underground.
- Mayor Sadayuki Suzuki said, "Personally, I view the proposal positively," though he intends to consult city assembly members before making a final decision.
- If accepted, Hitachiomiya would become the fifth site surveyed, joining Suttsu Town, Kamoenai Village, Genkai Town, and Ogasawara Village in a selection process expected to span 20 years.
