Senate blocks bills on data centers and insider trading ahead of six-week recess
Democrats blocked the ratepayer bill and stock trading ban, with polls showing 63% of Americans worry about data centers' impact on electricity prices.
On Wednesday, Senate Democrats blocked the Republican-backed Ratepayer Protection Act and the Stop Insider Trading Act in WASHINGTON, preventing both measures from advancing as lawmakers prepare for a six-week recess.
The Ratepayer Protection Act would have required large power users like data centers to pay for grid upgrades; the bill fell three votes shy of the 60 needed to advance.
Recent AP-NORC/University of Chicago polls found 63% of Americans are concerned about electricity price impacts from data centers, though Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N., dismissed the legislation as 'nothing more than a messaging bill on the eve of an election.'
Senate Democrats also blocked the Stop Insider Trading Act, which included a voter identification measure from the Save America Act that critics deemed a nonstarter and failed to restrict existing stock holdings.
According to an Economist/YouGov poll, 51% of Americans say new data centers are a bad thing, illustrating the political divide as the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes required to advance these measures.
