Saskatchewan Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall to resign before fall sitting
Wagantall will leave after 10 years in Parliament, setting up a by-election in Yorkton-Melville and adding to a list of six vacancies.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall announced she will resign her Yorkton-Melville seat effective Aug. 31, 2026, fast-tracking her departure from Parliament.
Representing the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville since 2015, Wagantall previously committed to serving until the next federal election; the seat has been held by Conservatives and their Reform and Canadian Alliance predecessors since 1993.
The MP faced scrutiny over socially conservative views on abortion and the COVID-19 pandemic; she was re-elected last year with 78 per cent of the vote despite this controversy.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre thanked Wagantall for "more than a decade of principled and faithful service to the great people of Yorkton Melville," while she wrote of "a deep, prevailing and confident hope."
Six by-elections will fill vacancies in coming months as Wagantall joins a growing list of MPs resigning in recent months, with some departing politics entirely and others accepting diplomatic appointments.
