Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab S12 Series and SmartTag3 – channelnews

Samsung has unveiled its latest flagship Android tablets, the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S12+, alongside a new SmartTag 3 tracker that promises improved range, more precise finding and longer battery life. The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra sits at the top of Samsung’s new tablet lineup, pairing a huge 14.6-inch display with a surprisingly slim 5.1mm design. It will cost A$2,299 in Australia, while the smaller 12.6-inch Galaxy Tab S12+ starts at A$1,999. Interestingly, there’s no replacement for the 11-inch Galaxy Tab S11 this time around, leaving Samsung’s new flagship tablet range focused entirely on larger screens. Both tablets are aimed heavily at productivity and creative work, with Samsung highlighting features such as Note Assist, Multi Window and Gemini integration. Multi Window can divide the display into as many as three sections, making it easier to work across several apps at once. The displays themselves are also getting some attention. Both tablets offer a peak brightness of 1,600 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate, while IP68 dust and water resistance is included across the range. The jump in brightness is particularly significant for the Galaxy Tab S12+, whose predecessor reached around 650 nits. There are a few reasons to step up to the Ultra beyond its larger display. It adds an 8MP ultrawide rear camera alongside the standard 13MP camera and supports Wi-Fi 7, whereas the Galaxy Tab S12+ tops out at Wi-Fi 6E. Inside, both tablets are powered by MediaTek’s 3nm Dimensity 9500 processor, which Samsung says delivers improvements to general performance and graphics. Samsung continues to bundle its S Pen stylus with both models, although anyone wanting to turn either tablet into more of a laptop replacement will have to pay extra for a keyboard. Samsung will offer a standard book cover keyboard as well as a Pro version equipped with a full-size trackpad. Battery life is rated at up to 23 hours for the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and 21 hours for the Galaxy Tab S12+, with both supporting 45W charging. The Ultra can be configured with up to 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage, while the S12+ tops out at 12GB of memory and 512GB of storage. Both also retain microSD support, allowing users to add as much as 2TB of additional storage. Samsung is throwing in several software offers with the tablets, including extended trials for apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Notability, plus a one-year Goodnotes subscription. The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S12+ will go on sale in Australia on October 22, with both available in grey. Samsung also unveiled its third-generation SmartTag, which gets a substantial redesign along with upgrades aimed at making lost items easier to track down. The SmartTag3 is 35% smaller and 33% lighter than its predecessor, according to Samsung. It is also more power efficient, with battery life reaching up to 790 days in power-saving mode, compared with 700 days for the previous model. It continues to use a replaceable CR2032 coin battery. One of the biggest upgrades is an improved Compass View. When paired with a compatible Galaxy device, the feature can now provide distance and directional guidance from as far as 60 metres away. Once an item moves outside direct connection range, Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network can take over. The company says the network includes more than 900 million participating Galaxy devices, which can help locate a missing SmartTag as it moves farther away. Samsung says location updates through the network are also faster, while proactive alerts can help users keep tabs on tagged belongings. Another new feature is Place Notification, which lets users define an area and receive an alert when a tagged item enters or leaves it. SmartTag 3 also supports location history, movement detection, left-behind alerts and an NFC-based lost mode that can display registered contact information when scanned with a compatible Android device. Perhaps most notably, Samsung says SmartTag 3 introduces cross-platform support for both Galaxy and iOS devices for the first time in the SmartTag lineup. The Samsung SmartTag 3 is expected to launch in Australia in 2027 alongside a range of accessories for attaching it to items such as luggage. Australian pricing has yet to be announced.
