Woman who died in crash following police pursuit named
The watchdog is reviewing dashcam footage and CCTV after 19-year-old Roman Kalas and Karen Joseph died in the six-minute pursuit crash.
- Karen Joseph, 62, died in hospital on Friday, four days after a collision on Warwick Road in Stratford-upon-Avon. Roman Kalas, 19, died at the scene on August 24 when his black Audi A3 struck her white Ford Puma.
- The pursuit began on Birmingham Road when Kalas failed to stop for Warwickshire Police. Officers activated blue lights and sirens, following the vehicle for approximately six minutes before the crash at 17:23 BST.
- IOPC director Derrick Campbell confirmed an independent investigation is underway, stating: "Given two members of the public have died in an incident involving a police pursuit, it's important that an independent investigation is carried out."
- Coroner for Warwickshire, Sean McGovern, is opening inquests for both Kalas and Joseph on Friday. Investigators are reviewing dashcam footage and retracing the pursuit route to establish full circumstances.
