Former lecturer admits causing death of couple in crash while drink-driving
Sophie Hynd admitted driving into oncoming traffic while impaired by alcohol, leaving a 10-year-old boy seriously injured and prompting a court return in October.
- On Thursday, former Fife College lecturer Sophie Hynd pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to causing the deaths of Jatinder Kaur, 48, and Satwant Singh, 64, by dangerous driving.
- Hynd admitted driving into an oncoming Volkswagen Polo "whilst impaired by alcohol" on the B981 in Cluny, Fife, on December 19 last year after motorists reported her vehicle swerving erratically into opposing traffic.
- Satwant died two days later from injuries medics deemed "not survivable," while the couple's 10-year-old son Princedeep was seriously injured. Their three children stated they "will miss them more than words can express."
- Judge Michael O'Grady KC described the offence as "very grave," remanding Hynd in custody. Defence lawyer Ewen Roy said she "recognises her actions had devastating consequences which weigh on her heavily."
- The case is due to call again in October for sentencing, as Hynd remains in custody. She lost her position at Fife College following the incident.
