Major UK Supermarket Launches 1,000 Apprenticeships to Get Young People Into Work
The programme combines two years of training and work experience as Morrisons backs craft roles and leadership pathways for young people.
- On August 20, Morrisons announced its Fresh Start Programme, pledging to create 1,000 apprenticeships for 18 to 24-year-old NEETs by 2030 as part of a two-year scheme offering fully funded qualifications.
- Group People Director Jodie Keating stated the initiative addresses a critical UK challenge: "There are more than a million young people across the UK who are not currently in education, employment or training."
- Participants will begin with 13 weeks of on-the-job training, then progress to a 12-month apprenticeship in specialist roles including skilled Butchers, Fishmongers, and Bakers at Market Street counters.
- Completing the apprenticeship and end-point assessment allows participants to progress into leadership roles, including a six-month placement at the Sir Ken Morrison Leadership School.
- Morrisons is collaborating with the IGD and British Retail Consortium to support Government employment goals; the announcement follows reports the supermarket cut more than 4,000 jobs in the past year.
