ISRO’s 51.7-Metre Giant Gets Ready to Put India’s Eye in the Sky

EOS-05 will provide continuous imagery of the Indian subcontinent and support border monitoring, weather tracking and fire detection, ISRO said.

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation will launch the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite from Sriharikota at 2.55am on Friday, marking ISRO's first flight in nearly eight months.
  • EOS-05 represents a renewed effort after the earlier GISAT-1 mission failed during launch five years ago due to a technical problem with the GSLV-F10 rocket's cryogenic upper stage.
  • Unlike Cartosat or RISAT series satellites operating in low Earth orbit at altitudes around 60 km to 2,000 km, EOS-05 will operate from a geosynchronous orbit about 36,000 km above Earth.
  • This position enables a persistent view of the Indian subcontinent, useful for tracking severe weather, fires, and border changes; the satellite carries two instruments with 42 metres per pixel resolution.
  • ISRO describes the satellite as India's first state-of-the-art imaging platform in geosynchronous orbit, intended for both civilian and strategic applications including detailed Earth monitoring and environmental tracking.
