Great drama unfolded at the end when the Hungarian Bence Venyercsán was forced into a time penalty just 100 meters before the finish. His bronze became a sixth place.
BIRMINGHAM. Swedish medal hopeful Perseus Karlström finished fourth at the European Championships. Early in the race, the 36-year-old veteran lost ground to the front runners over the marathon distance. The new setup created chaotic scenes.
Despite the forced rest, the Hungarian athlete finished with a new national record at Saturday's competition - he felt the punishment was unfair.
