UK grocery inflation eases further, says Worldpanel

Worldpanel by Numerator said 31.3% of UK grocery sales included a deal as supermarkets competed to keep shoppers from paying more.

  • On Tuesday, market researcher Worldpanel by Numerator reported British grocery inflation eased to 2.1% in the four weeks to August 9, marking the lowest rate since October 2024.
  • Fierce supermarket competition, consumer resistance to price hikes, and improved supplier hedging kept food inflation below earlier forecasts, down from 2.6% the previous month.
  • Shoppers stocking up for the heat boosted sales of sun cream 58.4% and frozen fruit 48.1%, while ice cream and sorbet sales surged 26.1%, Sally Ball, business unit director at Worldpanel by Numerator, said.
  • With 31.3% of purchases including a discount—the highest level this year—households kept bills down as average grocery spending fell to £410, a £14.24 decrease.
  • Among retailers, online grocer Ocado enjoyed the fastest growth with a 13.1% sales increase, while Sainsbury's rose 3.5% and Lidl gained market share to 8.8% in the 12 weeks to August 9.
