Gunmen abduct worshippers from Nigeria mosque, police say

  • On Friday, armed men abducted over 60 worshippers from Kpenya Mosque in the Dekara district of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, police said on Saturday. The attackers stormed the mosque during prayers before moving into neighboring communities.
  • This incident follows recent deadly raids in Borgu, a region bordering Kebbi, Kwara, and the Republic of Benin. The area witnessed a January attack in Kasuwan-Daji village that killed at least 30 people.
  • Federal lawmaker Jafar Muhammad Shetiman Borgu reported that gunmen simultaneously targeted Dekara, Gidan-Zana, Sabon Gida, and Masaka communities. Some worshippers sustained machete wounds while others escaped.
  • Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that "joint security detachment has been deployed to the area for assessment and rescue operations." Abiodun added that initial reports indicate no lives were lost.
  • Mass kidnappings for ransom have become common across northwestern and north-central Nigeria, where armed criminal gangs frequently raid villages and highways. These recurring attacks heighten security concerns for communities surrounding the wider Kainji Lake area.
