Rangers goalie Joonas Korpisalo is week to week with a lower-body injury, AP source says
Joonas Korpisalo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury, and Dylan Garand returns to the NHL roster as New York’s backup.
On Thursday, New York Rangers backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, considered week-to-week by the team.
Recalled from the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack, 24-year-old Dylan Garand fills the roster vacancy after clearing waivers earlier in the week.
Korpisalo was acquired from the Boston Bruins this offseason for a $3 million annual salary, though it remains unclear exactly when the injury occurred since he has not played a game this season.
Thursday's home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Friday's game at the Detroit Red Wings create a back-to-back schedule; Garand could start the second game in Michigan.
Igor Shesterkin, who started Tuesday's 3-0 loss at Boston, remains the primary option in net while the team adjusts to the temporary loss of its backup goaltender.
