Theft of Critical Wildfire Equipment Hinders Firefighting Efforts in Summerland
BC Wildfire Service says stolen pumps and other marked gear are disrupting suppression efforts on the Bald Range wildfire, and it is asking for tips.
- The BC Wildfire Service reported that critical firefighting pumps were stolen near Summerland, urging the public to contact the RCMP with information on the stolen equipment.
- Covering about 220 square kilometres, the Bald Range Wildfire remains out of control near Summerland; Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen officials reported 150 structures were damaged or destroyed.
- BCWS spokesperson Erin Catherall noted conditions remain "excruciatingly dry," while RDOS spokesperson Erick Thompson said crews are working "flat out" to replace power poles and clear danger trees.
- Officials ask the public to remain clear of the Summerland Arena and Summerland Secondary School, which serve as command and helicopter support sites for firefighting operations.
- With only 1.8 millimetres of rain over the past 47 days, the BCWS warned that stronger, shifting winds expected on Friday could result in increased fire behaviour.
