RCMP sergeant details weapon search in Grand Forks manslaughter trial
The officer said police found no axe, hatchet or signs of struggle, while the defence pressed questions about weapons and forensic testing.
- On Tuesday, RCMP crime scene manager David Mackey testified in the manslaughter trial of Sean Tiessen, 47, who claims self-defence in the April 16, 2023, death of Joshua Lockwood, 33.
- Mackey noted that despite statements claiming Lockwood "approached or threatened an axe or hatchet" at Tiessen, police found no weapons in proximity to the body when they arrived on scene.
- Defence lawyer Paul McMurray questioned why police did not seize a hammer found at the home, calling it a "potential weapon," but Mackey explained investigators focused on the axe based on statements.
- Police tested the master bedroom lock to determine if Tiessen could have secured himself inside, while Mackey noted the bathroom appeared to be where the gun was "made ready to go."
- During cross-examination, McMurray raised substance use by Roberts and Lockwood; the trial continues Wednesday in Rossland Supreme Court.
