B.C. sex offender arrested, released and arrested again in less than a week in Langley, RCMP say
Police say the suspect was arrested twice in six days and remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing on break-and-enter and obstruction charges.
On Monday, August 17, Langley RCMP arrested Michael Wayne Carpenter following a residential break-and-enter in the 19700-block of 64 Avenue, charging the 55-year-old with break-and-enter and obstruction of a peace officer.
Five days earlier, on August 12, RCMP arrested Carpenter in the Willoughby area for trespassing at night, though he was released before the second incident occurred within six days.
Vancouver Police issued a public notice in 2020 identifying Carpenter as a high-risk sex offender with convictions for sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, and uttering threats to cause harm in Kamloops.
"Residents should never have to fear for their safety inside their own homes," said Supt. Harm Dosange, Officer in Charge of the Langley RCMP, calling the incidents particularly alarming.
RCMP Sgt. Sharoom explained that "trespass at night" is a criminal code offense under Section 177, whereas regular trespass in B.C. is typically a provincial offense handled with violation tickets.
