B.C. Greens Unveil Farmland, Toxic Drug Policies in Greater Victoria
Emily Lowan says the party would restrict foreign farmland ownership and expand safer supply, after B.C. recorded 776 overdose deaths in six months.
On Thursday, B.C. Greens Leader Emily Lowan announced new platforms addressing farmland ownership and the toxic drug crisis in Greater Victoria, joined by party candidate Lisa Lapointe, the former B.C. chief coroner.
The Greens' drug policy proposes providing pharmaceutical alternatives and decriminalizing personal possession, responding to more than 18,000 overdose deaths since 2016 and 776 in the first six months of 2026 according to B.C. Coroner Service data.
Addressing food security, Lowan proposed restricting Agricultural Land Reserve parcels over four hectares to citizens and permanent residents, while empowering municipalities to tax idle farmland and improving public ownership data.
Lapointe, who served as B.C. chief coroner for 13 years, is running for the Saanich South seat against NDP candidate Richard Zussman and Conservative Cathie Ounsted, leveraging her experience on drug policy.
The policy also commits the Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Ministry to protect food crops during drought periods, prioritizing food sovereignty amid increasing climate disasters and trade tensions with the United States.
