B.C. Man Sentenced for ‘Hateful’ Messages Written on Victoria Historic Synagogue
Judge Micah Rankin said the graffiti was a hate crime that deeply affected congregants, including families attending a bar mitzvah.
A British Columbia man was sentenced to eight months in jail on Monday for defacing a historic Victoria synagogue with antisemitic graffiti; Arthur Roberts pleaded guilty to mischief and uttering threats.
Roberts was arrested in August 2025 after CCTV footage identified him defacing Congregation Emanu-El, the oldest continually operating synagogue on the west coast of North America, with messages describing Jewish people as "evil" and "monsters."
Judge Micah Rankin gave Roberts six months for mischief and two months for uttering threats that arose from a text message to his mother expressing a desire to kill police, describing him as an "extremely isolated" 54-year-old man with mental-health problems.
The ruling noted the "profoundly negative" effect on congregants, including attendees of a bar mitzvah held the day after Roberts defaced the building, occurring amid a broader context of increasing antisemitic incidents across Canada.
Judge Rankin clarified that while criticism of the State of Israel is not necessarily antisemitic, the collective attribution of responsibility to all Jews for Israel's actions renders the words "unquestionably hateful.
