Zcash Plans Quantum-Safe Upgrade: Will ZEC Price Recover?
The upgrade would add hash-based signature checks for transparent payments, which make up about 70% of ZEC supply, developers said.
Zcash developers have set January 2027 as their target for quantum-resistant payment support, with Zakura engineer Roman Akhtariev announcing the proposal to protect transparent addresses against future computing advances.
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake urged the industry on October 7 to prepare for "bunker mode," warning that AI could find a shortcut through wallet mathematics "in months, not years" in the worst case.
New network instructions will allow Zcash to verify hash-based signatures such as WOTS, which function as digital fingerprints made from secret data designed to resist quantum attacks.
Approximately 70% of ZEC supply resides in transparent addresses currently using elliptic-curve cryptography, making these holdings the priority focus for the proposed quantum-resistant security upgrades.
While January serves as a development target, no confirmed network activation date has been announced, even as ZEC traded near $1,240 on October 9 following a recent market correction.
