The RAMpocalypse Has Led Global PC Shipments to Drop 20 Percent in Just 12 Months
Omdia said DRAM and SSDs now make up nearly 40% of PC component costs as shipments fell 21.2% to 58.1 million units.
Omdia reported that worldwide shipments of PCs fell 21.2 percent year-on-year to 58.1 million units in 3Q26, marking a sharp contraction after earlier demand surge.
Vendors and Channels rushed to build inventory earlier this year to avoid anticipated price hikes, while AI-driven demand for DRAM and SSDs pushed component costs to nearly 40 percent of PC prices.
Lenovo retained its position as the world's largest vendor with 14.9 million units, while Dell recorded a 25 percent drop to 7.6 million and Apple saw an 11 percent decline, according to IDC.
IDC research director Jitesh Ubrani said "channels are now worried about carrying too much inventory" as high prices suppress demand, though retailers clearing stock may offer temporary consumer relief.
Omdia expects global PC shipments to fall another 24 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter, followed by a further 7 percent decline across 2027, signaling prolonged weakness ahead.
