Woman Hospitalized After Suspected Black Bear Attack Near Onion Lake Ski Trails
A woman remains hospitalized after the suspected defensive encounter, and officers say multiple bears may have been involved.
A woman remains hospitalized following a bear attack on Oct. 3 near the Onion Lake Ski Trails. Conservation officer Mike Geuze described the incident as a likely defensive encounter occurring around 10:30 a.m.
Multiple bears, likely a mother with cubs, ran past the woman before the attack, Geuze reported. The final bear may have been spooked by a passing vehicle, prompting the defensive reaction.
The incident occurred along the Lakelse Mainline near the turnoff for West Lake Recreation Site. Conservation officers are currently investigating the circumstances, which remain in early stages.
Signs have been placed in the area, and Conservation officers are urging the public to avoid the Onion Lake Ski Trails for now. The woman remains hospitalized with injuries.
Conservation officers believe the animal involved was a black bear, though no traps have been set. Officials are not attempting to capture the bear, citing the defensive nature consistent with natural behavior.
