Rajasthan: Two Male Great Indian Bustards Released Into Jaisalmer’s Desert
Bhupender Yadav released two male birds as scientists said captive breeding has produced about 98 chicks and will guide further rewilding.
- On Sunday, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released two captive-bred male Great Indian Bustards into Desert National Park in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, marking the first rewilding step for birds raised at conservation breeding centres in Ramdevra and Sam.
- The initiative follows nine years of extensive research led by the Wildlife Institute of India and the Rajasthan State Forest Department, serving as a safeguard against extinction as only about 150 Great Indian Bustards remain in the wild.
- Scientists have successfully raised approximately 98 captive-bred chicks despite a global survival rate of barely 48 per cent; the two released birds are tagged and housed in a Restricted-to-Humans enclosure for monitoring.
- The Environment Ministry stated the release provides critical scientific learnings for refining reintroduction protocols, while Yadav noted the birds are vital for grassland conservation and serve as key stopovers along the Central Asia flyway.
- Based on monitoring outcomes, the WII and the Forest Department will decide whether to release additional birds, while Project GIB encompasses habitat restoration including around 200 square kilometres of fenced grassland enclosures inside Desert National Park.
