Car Rolls over Into Dam, Kills Two
Police said the pair were not mother and daughter, and investigators are still probing how the SUV entered the dam.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Lisa and 10-year-old Arliyah died after their blue Subaru Tribeca crashed into a dam on Springvale Road in Tinana South, near Maryborough, with emergency services called just before 5:30 p.m.
Property owner Joel Hinschen discovered the submerged vehicle and pulled both victims from the water, saying, "I got in the water and pulled them both out of the car." His father performed CPR on the girl until help arrived.
Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit investigators are analyzing the scene, including skid marks and vehicle data, after the Subaru went through a fence before entering the dam. Police are examining whether speed was a factor in the crash.
Maryborough Patrol Group Inspector Paul Algie described the deaths as a "horrible tragedy," saying the close-knit community had been left shaken. Ten-year-old Arliyah was remembered as a bubbly girl with a "beautiful smile."
Algie reported 220 deaths on Queensland roads as of Thursday, including 26 in the Wide Bay region, stressing, "Behind every statistic was a family and community dealing with loss." Numbers are up from last year.
