West Midlands Buses Set to Be Nationalised to Save Thousands of Jobs
On Tuesday, the West Midlands Combined Authority acquired National Express West Midlands operations, moving the region's bus network into public control to prevent service collapse.
Following the parent company's decision to leave the market, WMCA officials warned the exit posed a 'significant risk' to the region's largest public transport network.
The partnership protects around 4,800 jobs and keeps up to 750 buses on the road daily, backed by £11.5 million in Government funding over three years.
West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker stated the move enables local control over fares and routes, saying, "I wasn't prepared to stand by and watch hundreds of buses disappear."
Separately, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced disabled passengers across England will receive 24/7 free bus travel starting next April to ease cost-of-living pressures.
