Veterans take flight in World War II-era biplane

The nonprofit has given more than 8,500 free flights to veterans nationwide as a thank-you for their service.

  • Eight veterans experienced flights in a World War II-era biplane on Thursday, thanks to the nonprofit Dream Flights. Wisconsin native and Army veteran Bernie Huizenga, 87, was the first participant.
  • Founder Darryl Fisher started Dream Flights in 2011 with initial funding from Wisconsin-based Direct Supply to provide free aviation experiences honoring veterans' service. The nonprofit operates nationwide.
  • "I've been in small planes but never a biplane, never an open cockpit," Huizenga said. Fisher noted the flights "invigorate" veterans, making them feel as if they are in their twenties.
  • Operating six planes with nearly 20 pilots nationwide, Dream Flights has provided more than 8,500 flights to veterans. Matthew Koch of Direct Supply said the partnership "connects what we believe in" regarding America's seniors.
  • Fisher, who pilots the planes, said he feels lucky to "do this" every morning. The program's ongoing mission reflects a sustained commitment to honoring veterans through unique aviation experiences.
