VENOM Frontman CONRAD 'CRONOS' LANT Dead At 63
The frontman helped shape black metal over four decades, and Venom said no cause of death was given.
On Tuesday, Venom singer and bassist Conrad 'Cronos' Lant died at age 63, his band confirmed in a statement today. The legendary co-founder shaped heavy metal for more than four decades.
Lant helped co-found Venom in England in 1978, launching a band that would release 16 studio albums including 'Welcome To Hell' and 'Black Metal' , which essentially kickstarted the black metal genre.
The band stated, "For more than four decades, Conrad's voice, bass and vision were at the heart of Venom." His son, Nathan, thanked the 'Legions' for supporting his father throughout his career.
Venom released its sixteenth studio album 'Into Oblivion' in May 2026, marking the band's first new recordings since 2018. The band emphasized that Cronos remained grateful for the loyalty of devoted 'Legions' throughout his life.
Prior to his death, Lant was involved in a June 2024 legal dispute with former bandmate Anthony 'Abaddon' Bray over merchandise designs. Meanwhile, Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn and Bray announced plans to celebrate the 45th anniversary of 'Welcome To Hell' at festivals in 2026.
