US military says it disabled cargo vessel trying to run Iran blockade

CENTCOM said the strike disabled the ship’s propulsion after repeated warnings, part of a blockade campaign that has turned back 135 vessels.

  • Central Command disabled the Panama-flagged Ocean Molica, also known as the Arika Sun, in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday after the vessel attempted to run the ongoing naval blockade against Iran.
  • The cargo ship ignored repeated warnings while attempting to transit regional waters after departing an Iranian port, Command stated.
  • An American jet struck the stern of the Ocean Molica with 'a precision munition, fully disabling the ship's propulsion without harming the crew,' the military confirmed.
  • Command warned mariners in the Gulf and approaches to the Strait of Hormuz to heed blockade warnings, monitor broadcasts, and contact naval forces.
  • Shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz fell to the lowest level in more than two months, a vital waterway that previously carried 20 per cent of global oil consumption.
