UK recruiters see signs of jobs downturn easing
The REC/KPMG survey shows permanent placements rose to 49.2 in February, marking the strongest improvement in almost three years despite ongoing slight contraction.
- On March 9, a Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG survey found starting salaries for permanent staff declined last month at the slowest pace since October, while the downturn in new permanent staff recruiters eased.
- The survey, based on responses from a panel of around 400 recruitment agencies collected between February 10 and February 23, was compiled by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG.
- The placements gauge registered 49.2 in February, up from 46.9 in January, reaching its highest level in nearly three years but staying in contraction.
- KPMG's Jon Holt said, 'Despite a marginal fall in hiring last month, the jobs market was showing its strongest signs of improvement in three years, with hiring at its closest point to turning positive,' highlighting cautious optimism.
- The survey also found the temporary staff hiring index fell to 48.0 from 50.3, while temporary staff availability increased at the softest pace in over a year.
