UK recruiters see first rise in permanent role hiring since 2022
REC and KPMG said permanent placements rose to 50.5, the first increase since September 2022, as temporary demand strengthened and salaries climbed.
Britain's jobs market showed signs of recovery in August as permanent staff placements rose for the first time since September 2022, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG survey published on Monday.
A reading above 50 indicates growth, marking the first expansion in permanent hiring in almost four years after a prolonged period of weakness when businesses remained cautious about recruitment amid economic uncertainty.
Temporary staff billings increased at the second-fastest pace in more than three years, while vacancies fell again showing overall contraction. The shrinkage pace was the second-weakest in nearly two years, suggesting easing pressure.
Candidate availability rose at the fastest pace in three months, driven partly by redundancies, while starting salaries for permanent roles strengthened at their fastest pace since January.
The latest figures provide tentative evidence that Britain's labour market could be stabilizing after sustained weak hiring, though continued vacancy declines highlight ongoing challenges facing employers and workers.
