- Households mitigated inflation by prioritizing discounts, as spending on promotional deals surged by £243 million, a 7% increase, while full-price sales growth lagged at just 1.4%.
- Ocado led retailer growth with a 13.3% sales rise over 12 weeks, while Marks & Spencer saw grocery sales climb 14.8% and Asda returned to growth with a 0.1% increase.
- Consumer spending headwinds will strengthen from October as most households face rising energy bills, despite Prime Minister Andy Burnham prioritizing cost-of-living efforts.
- The Food and Drink Federation projects food price inflation could climb to nearly 4% by year-end and exceed 6% by mid-2027, driven by geopolitical tensions and El Niño weather patterns.
