Disposable BBQs Removed From Supermarket Shelves Amid UK Wildfire Risk
Retailers are acting after fire chiefs warned of more than 700 wildfire incidents this year and urged temporary limits on the grills.
Major UK supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Asda have removed disposable BBQs from sale to mitigate wildfire risks, following voluntary guidance from the National Fire Chiefs Council lasting until Wednesday, August 12.
Fire chiefs warned that wildfires are becoming an "increasingly significant and sustained pressure" on services, with more than 700 incidents recorded in England and Wales this year driven by hot weather and human activity.
While chains like The Co-op and Wilko complied with the guidance, Morrisons appeared to be selling instant grills as of Tuesday, prompting Labour MP Jon Pearce for High Peak to urge the Government to make the ban mandatory.
Recent blazes in Dunwich, Suffolk, and the Rhondda Valley in Wales have reinforced compliance needs, building on steps taken by Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, and M&S, which stopped selling disposable barbecues in 2022.
Campaigning for a full ban on disposable BBQs in public spaces, Pearce argues the Government must act ahead of next summer, noting "We have to accept the fact that the climate has changed.
