Two vie for mayor as Ladysmith election race gets underway
Beeston and Gourlay lead a mayoral contest that also includes nine council candidates as Ladysmith voters prepare to choose six councillors.
On Saturday, October 17, Ladysmith voters will choose between incumbent Mayor Deena Beeston and incumbent Coun. Ray Gourlay in the General Local Election.
Beeston was elected in a 2025 byelection following former mayor Aaron Stone's resignation, while Gourlay, first elected in 2022, submitted mayoral papers shortly before the deadline.
After 18 months, Beeston says she is prepared to navigate municipal systems, prioritizing fiscal scrutiny and bylaw clarity while noting, "we do not have the ability to suddenly come up with housing for people in our community."
Gourlay emphasizes his role as a relationship facilitator, aiming to improve Ladysmith council's tone after what he describes as "absolutely unacceptable comments" made by councillors.
Advance voting occurs at City Hall on Wednesday, October 7 and Wednesday, October 14, while general voting takes place Saturday, October 17 at the Frank Jameson Community Centre, where voters select one mayor and six council members.
