- Kainerugaba, the eldest child of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has railed against Turkish authorities for months, leading the Patriotic League's campaign claiming Lumbuye uses Turkish territory to attack national leadership.
- Earlier this year, Kainerugaba demanded $1 billion from Turkish authorities and the country's "most beautiful woman" to escape the threat of severing diplomatic ties or closing the embassy.
- "We have gathered here today not as enemies of Turkish people but as patriots of Uganda who are deeply disappointed," said Fadil Twalla, the group's secretary-general.
- Tensions extend beyond the embassy to Somalia, where analyst Angelo Izama of the Uganda-based Fanaka Kwawote think tank notes Turkey has become an influential security partner for the federal government against Shabab.
