Ethiopian forces regain control of border city after reported Eritrean incursion
Residents said Ethiopian troops and allied militia entered the city after drone strikes and explosions pushed Eritrean forces back, raising fears of wider war.
On Saturday, Ethiopian government forces and allied militia entered Adigrat, the strategic border city 30 km from Eritrea, days after Eritrean troops withdrew from the region.
Ethiopia warned the UN Security Council this week that Eritrean troops had advanced up to 60 km inside Tigray, claiming the presence of foreign forces left it with no option but to defend itself.
Explosions were reported near Adigrat from Wednesday through Friday as the US-based conflict monitor ACLED said Ethiopia used drone strikes against Eritrean forces, who then withdrew from positions near the city.
Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel accused Ethiopia of declaring a war of aggression to secure sea access, while Eritrea denied the incursion reports as false and part of an Ethiopian plan to justify conflict.
This fighting marks the biggest escalation since the 2020-2022 civil war, threatening the 2018 peace agreement that earned Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed the Nobel Peace Prize.
