Malaysia PM Anwar Pays Tribute to Siti Hasmah, Orders State Funeral
Anwar Ibrahim ordered state funeral honours for the former first lady, who died at 100 and was remembered for decades of public service.
- On Monday, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, passed away at the National Heart Institute at age 100. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed she will receive a state funeral.
- Tun Siti Hasmah was a dedicated medical professional who focused on public health and maternal care after graduating from King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1955.
- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim noted she was "very active with her charitable works when she was the prime minister's wife." Her remains will be taken to Masjid As-Syarif in Selangor at 1:30 PM for public respects before burial.
- Following Asar prayers, burial is scheduled for 4:30 PM at the Heroes' Mausoleum in Putrajaya. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated, "My thoughts and prayers are with Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the entire family in facing this loss."
- The government accorded the State Funeral Ceremony recognizing her status as a revered national figure. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim directed the Chief Secretary and Defence Forces to ensure honours "befitting a national statesman.
