Trump’s $90 Payments Are on the Way to 20 Million Seniors
The White House said the one-time payments will offset October Medicare premiums and reach fewer than a third of Medicare enrollees.
On October 8, the Trump administration issued $90 payments to 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees via direct deposit and 875,000 mailed checks, excluding seniors covered by Medicaid or subject to income-related adjustments.
President Trump is financing the payouts by diverting revenue from the $2 billion Medicare Improvement Fund, which Congress established in 2008 to improve Medicare services rather than for direct beneficiary payouts.
California leads the senior payment distribution with 1.52 million recipients, followed by Texas and Florida ; the administration simultaneously sent $500 checks to nearly 1 million Americans across 30 states citing alleged ACA exchange overcharges.
Democratic Sen. Roy Wyden of Oregon, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, denounced the payouts as "another desperate attempt by a failed president to escape Americans' revulsion with his failed agenda," citing the election timing.
Trump has promised to distribute $5,000 dividend checks to all American adults if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate, though critics argue current disbursements function as political campaign tools.
