Trump Loses 21st Straight Court Fight over State Voter Rolls
Reuters says the Justice Department has lost 21 appeals since January as federal judges reject efforts to obtain state voter rolls.
A federal judge ruled Thursday that states are not required to share voter registration records with the federal government, dealing President Donald Trump's administration its 21st consecutive courtroom loss regarding efforts to obtain statewide voter rolls.
The Justice Department previously sued over two dozen states that refused to comply with federal requests for voter rolls containing sensitive information, including birthdays and partial Social Security numbers.
Secretaries of state have raised concerns that federal agencies allegedly misinformed them, fearing the requested data could be used to verify U.S. citizenship in ways that violate state jurisdiction.
The Trump administration has combined court battles with threats to withhold disaster relief funds from states that do not use federal systems for substantiating voters' citizenship or limit mail ballots.
President Donald Trump claims noncitizen voting is widespread, though a Reuters probe found only 129 individuals have been prosecuted for such activity since 1996, with most cases stemming from voter confusion.
