Trump dwarfs his predecessors in the number of ultra-rich in his second White House, report shows
Public Citizen said the figure is more than four times the combined total under the three previous presidents, with eight Cabinet members among the ultrawealthy appointees.
On Monday, consumer advocacy group Public Citizen reported that President Donald Trump appointed 57 officials worth at least $100 million, more than four times the combined total under the three previous presidents.
Trump, himself a billionaire, has long viewed financial success as evidence of executive mastery and has sought counsel from the nation's wealthiest people for high-profile leadership roles.
The 57 appointees include 17 ambassadors and 40 senior officials; Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Education Secretary Linda McMahon are billionaires, while Bush, Biden, and Obama administrations each appointed five or fewer.
Lisa Gilbert, Public Citizen's co-president, warned that "when the people holding the reins of government are drawn overwhelmingly from the ultra-rich, it leads to misplaced incentives and corruption."
Last month, only 32% of U.S. adults approved of Trump's economic handling, down from 40% at the start of his second term, as the Republican Party faces headwinds for November elections.
